February Legislative Update

A quick recap of what’s going on in Arizona and beyond.

Democratic Bills: Arizona Affordability Agenda

There are several bills submitted by Arizona House and Senate Democrats that would make life more affordable for all Arizonans. Unfortunately, the GOP lead committees are refusing to hear them. These include:

  • HB2782 – Establishes a Healthcare Claims Consumer Assistance Program that would help Arizona residents with appealing denied claims and more. – Simacek
  • HB2757 – Sets price increase limits and makes price gouging of essential generic medications by manufacturers and distributors illegal. – Mathis
  • HB2360 – Sets timeline of >60 days of a single family home being on the market before a corporation can purchase. – De Los Santos
  • HB2848 – Limits the number of homes purchased by a Corporation or LLC in a single year and the total number of homes owned by a corporation in a county. – De Los Santos
  • HB2847 – Ban algorithmic price fixing to establish rental rates. – De Los Santos
  • SB1397 – See HB2782. – Burch
  • SB1402 – See HB2757. – Burch
  • SB1403 – Sets maximum fair price for prescription drugs. – Burch
  • SB1209 – See HB2757. – Ortiz

Bills Republicans are Advancing Instead: WTF?!

Instead of hearing and advancing bills that would make Arizona more affordable for all, Arizona Republicans are pushing legislation that helps absolutely no one:

  • SCR1028 – Requires school district bond measures to pass with a 60% supermajority. – Bolick
  • HCR2055 – Declares drug cartels are terrorist organizations. – Montenegro
  • SB1001 – Ends early drop off of ballots on Friday before election day. – JD Mesnard
  • SB1375 – Forces county recorders to let anyone download voter registration rolls for free. – Finchem
  • SB1455 – Bans election officials running for re-election from performing duties. – Farnsworth
  • SB1541 – Sets 10-year expiration date for voting by mail. – Carroll
  • SB1298 – Expands existing religious property tax exemption to religious schools. – Kavanagh
  • SB1693 – Mandate that ESA students must be allowed to try out for interscholastic activities at public schools (at no cost). – Kavanagh
  • SB1694 – Ban AZ Universities from receiving state funds in any fiscal year they offer courses on diversity, equity, and inclusion. – Farnsworth
  • HB2700 – Insert a specific focus on ‘Gulf of America’ into the state high school social studies standard for graduation. – T. Martinez

Federal: Fascists Say What?

Where to even begin…

  • DOGE has gutted key agencies and critical funding that impact people locally, nationally, and worldwide. No transparency or evidence of cost savings has been provided, and many statements have been debunked.
  • Countless executive orders, each a little worse than the last (it doesn’t matter which order you read them; this still applies). Tuesday, he signed an executive order to give himself greater authority over regulatory agencies like the Consumer Product Safety Commission, SEC, FDIC, and more.
  • Rapid, full-force implementation of Project 2025.
  • After USDOT rescinded approval of NYC’s congestion pricing, Trump took credit for “saving” Manhattan and all of New York, saying, “LONG LIVE THE KING” on his Truth Social. This was mirrored on the WH official account.
  • Fired thousands of Government employees and appointees, installing loyalists as department heads, and leaving the agencies woefully understaffed.

Democrats Fight Back

Even with significant disadvantages at every level in the Federal government, some of our Democratic leaders are stepping up to try and make a difference.

  • Virginia Democrats formed an emergency committee to investigate Trump’s federal funding/staff cuts.
  • House/Senate Dems rallying outside agencies affected by Trump and DOGE.
  • Dem AGs (including Arizona’s Kris Mayes) are filing lawsuits (successfully) to challenge DOGE and its actions.
  • Dems vote against confirmation of appointments.
  • Blocked DOGE from accessing sensitive Dept of Education data.
  • Affordability bills introduced.
  • Arizona Dems passed legislation to provide funding for free school lunches in the state!
  • Dems have won several special elections at various levels across the country.
